Day 1

August 2026

Zermatt to Trift

Zermatt – Berggasthaus Trift

Facts: 2.5 hours-3 hours, + 730 hm, from 1,620 m to 2,337 m above sea level

The journey to Trift is a feast for the eyes and soul. It is your first real experience of “getting away from it all”, the path which is not served by mountain railways, is a nice prelude to enter a quiet, albeit somewhat steep terrain. The scholar Albrecht von Haller embarked on this journey in the 18th century and remarked on the unique flora findings.

The Matterhorn is still hidden, but the Monte Rosa massif is magnificent upon the glorious ascent. The hut warden of the Berggasthaus Trift Hugo Biner, our friend, sends the Matterhorn Trek hiker often to the Schweinenen, Wisshorn, and Mettlehorn/Platthorn peaks. He is highly versed on the area and it surrounds…summiting the great Matterhorn mountain almost 100times.

Day 2

August 2026

Trift to Schonbielhut

Berggasthaus Trift to newly renovated Schoenbielhut

Facts: 4hr, xKM

The Matterhorn north face is a dominant experience on the way to the hut, in summer as well as in winter. Then the view opens up to the equally beautiful, white Dent d'Hérens, whose name probably goes back to a confusion with the Dent Blanche. Surrounded by powerful 4000s, the hut is the starting point of high alpine tours such as the Valais Haute Route. We will pass by streams, waterfalls, glaciers, marmots, and spot even chamois or perhaps a family of Ibex!
